Most likely the first person to encourage you to try was your parents. The people who encouraged you to walk were your parents while you were lying flat on the floor happy to crawl around on your hands and knees. You simply gazed at them for a while like a deer caught in headlights. You finally gave in to their demands that you get up and move your feet in a robotic manner you chose to give it a shot. Without a doubt you were awkward at first most of your attempts ended with you falling on your butt in your diaper or hitting your head on the table in the living room. Still confusion followed.
Since babies simply go back to crawling after their first few attempts you probably couldnt understand why it was so difficult. You will notice however that following those fruitless attempts they will watch you walk and even attempt to stand without your assistance. After attempting you appeared to want to walk for some reason. You wanted to perfect it after trying it once and finding it to be not too bad. This was the general pattern of the cycle. You get up with a stutter.
You take pride in your position. You step out and tumble. You continue to sway. You are a tall figure. After a few more steps youre done. Standing is an art you have perfected.
You actually walk a few paces before another table appears out of nowhere. Eventually your movements will become instinctive. Then you get up. You take pride in your position. You move. And you never crawl again.
Well perhaps you do occasionally. The point of this post is that it is not about babies. Ever since we were young we have been encouraged to try new things. Everybody has experienced their firsts: their first walk their first friend their first piece of candy their first day of work college or school etc. However for whatever reason trying is denigrated after a certain age. During our formative adult years trying new things is often associated with being strange.
Alternatively being foolish. or being a deluded dreamer. . You cant make any suggestions that resemble pipe dreams these days unless you want to face criticism. I know its not the best example to use walking to make my point but since when is it bad to want to try something different? However why must everyone else have completed the tasks we wish to complete before we can?
Let me explain. Because weve grown scared to try at some point in our lives. What was once our childlike curiosity has been rationalized into fear. We arrived by thinking. Well what will happen if I do this? .
to. Holy shit! Im not going to do that at all! What if (insert weak excuse here)? . There is no reason not to try.
I realize that this is due to evolutionary factors. In order to test our ability to fly we shouldnt jump off a bridge. Attempting to imitate what you see on television is also probably not the best idea. You dont want to sustain serious injuries do you? That does not however imply that you should not attempt things that may excite you. What if you decided to travel to Brazil one day just to see what would happen?
What if you tried to talk to that one girl youll probably never talk to? Lets take a chance and hope for the best. Sincerely there is no drawback. I do not advocate life-threatening stunts but the results are well worth the potential collateral damage which could range from a bruised ego to some broken bones depending on what you try. In my opinion you stand to benefit. 1.
A fresh lesson in life. 2. A worthy tale to tell. Venture out and take a chance. Life is all you have. But we continue to act as though its a lie even though everyone knows this.
When will that maybe later become lets do it right now? What are you saving for and waiting for? Why are you planning something so basic? Take up the cause of living each day as if it were your last. To be honest it makes a difference. To this day I still write for you all at night.
Is my life exciting? It certainly is when Im writing. Come along for the ride and discover if it can get any more thrilling.
Allow me to give you permission to try.
Try new things until the end of your life because thats what we should all be doing every single day.
