One Year to Live a Legacy

One Year to Live a Legacy

One young man named James Dean once said that you should live as if youll die today and dream as if youll live forever. . I concur with the first part which states that we have an infinite capacity for dreaming. It wont cost you much to take a quick nap and dream that you have amazing superpowers. We cannot however truly live each day as though it were our last at least not in the strict sense unless you truly are going to die today.

. I doubt I would travel far if today were my last day because I would have wasted it by the time I reached any nation on the other side of the Atlantic. Rather I would most likely donate everything I own. I would wake up the following morning with nothing to show for it though because it wouldnt actually be my last day. In actuality its simply not possible to live each day as though it were your last.

Lets get down to business. How are we to spend our days if we are unable to live each one as though it were our last? A new standard to live by. I suggest doing something different because of this: we should live as though we were going to die at the end of this year. Let me explain before you draw conclusions.

Lets say you only have a year to live. On January 1st 2011 imagine that your time will end at precisely 12:01 a. m. How would you act? Would you continue to lead the same life conversing with the same people giving in to the same anxieties and taking the same routes?

Or would you actually immerse yourself in a different culture launch a business that makes a difference and pay attention to the voice in the back of your mind that has been ignored for a long time living as though you truly would die by the end of the year? The time has come to take action. You have this year to live your life as a legacy and to realize your dreams. It is not necessary to start making changes in your life on January 1. The time to begin is now as is the case with any significant change you wish to make.

1. The conclusion you decide on needs to be noteworthy. Choosing a specific end is always important before you start working. And not just any end. Any average person can be more confident or make more money.

. You know why? Because these goals are nebulous and unclear. Ends with ambiguity should be avoided since it is impossible to quantify. It is important to remember that you have a full year to accomplish something remarkable and memorable (even if you are just starting now you still have 60 months).

Make no excuses. Do not wait for approval. I suggest you go big or go home but you still have time to make the biggest impression you can. 2. The goal is to work toward it every day.

Ill tell you a little secret: I literally consider my death every single day. My ultimate objective burns brightly in my mind every single day of my life. For you it ought to be the same. Every day you must strive toward the goal you are passionate about achieving. Writing down your daily goals will allow you to say This was the one thing I wanted to get done in support of my end today and I did it when you go to bed.

. You should dedicate at least one hour each day to your outstanding goal. 3. Just when youre done take on a new challenge. A year is an arbitrary time limit.

Its not necessary to complete in a specific year. You might be done in a few months or even a little more than a year depending on what youve decided to do. The one-year mark should always be your goal though. It is assumed that you will pass away by the end of this year. Dont waste time.

That being said feel free to choose another goal to work toward if you do finish your legacy much sooner than you anticipated. You can always do more to add more significance to your final days. . An explanation for leaving a legacy. There are some of you who might be wondering Why should I spend a year doing this when I can just keep going like I always have and eventually reach my goal?

. Or I need more time I know I can do amazing things with just a year. . . .

What emerges from these inquiries is once more an issue of ambiguity. Eventually and more time are words that only impede certainty. If you want to accomplish great things you have to be clear and firm. If someone were to ask you If not now when? you should answer clearly rather than ambiguously.

Do not put off starting your legacy. Begin right now. If nothing else pay attention to the advice contained in these wise words. Perhaps instead of wondering when youll get your next vacation you should create a life that you dont have to run away from. -Seth Godin.
