Genuinely caring about your work is the best way to maintain motivation. To achieve the outcomes you desire you consistently put forth your best effort rather than merely doing the bare minimum. Most people apply for jobs because they want to survive. This justification is strong enough to persuade anyone to enter the corporate ladder climber race and devote years of their lives to it. A story that corrects the record. Lets say you recently received your college diploma.
It takes months of sending out resumes before you finally get a job. Because of your hard work you have been receiving pay increases on a regular basis. The motivation to live diminishes as you eventually earn more than enough money to support yourself and live comfortably. To put it another way you start to become less concerned about the danger to your life. You eventually become significantly wealthier than you were a few years ago. Everyone in your vicinity compliments you on your financial skills.
They will say Youve come so far. . When will you begin a family? . Then another incentive appeared. You initially saw this job as a way to make ends meet.
However you have forgotten that it has been a long time since you first found work and that you are approaching marriageable age. They cant possibly make it on $70000 a year can they? Of course not! What about your kids college education? No you need more money. To earn enough money to cover tuition at all the best universities you will need to put in even more effort.
These days traditional incentives are everywhere thrown in your lap by society. It is your responsibility they say. You have an obligation to marry. Having children is your responsibility. Your obligation to support your childrens college education. You have a responsibility to avoid being shunned by the majority of people.
Fearing this you follow instructions to the letter. One of the girls is married. People raise children. Colleges have funding. After several years these objectives are gradually being met. The incentives eventually stop.
Your children have departed to continue their cycle. Your wife who is exhausted but relieved to be out of the war of childrearing is with you. Even though your funds have been severely depleted by college expenses they are more plentiful than ever. Indeed you are the same. Even after graduating from college you remain the same individual working toward a goal. The same individual is looking for a motivating factor to prolong his life.
the youthful individual who has unavoidably grown disinterested in life. Youre going to be an old person very soon. Those decades will not be reclaimed. Perhaps though you can begin searching for your passion now before its too late. the appropriate rewards. We are given incentives from birth.
You should keep crying and whining until your mother gets you the toy youve always desired. You should attend college in order to obtain a well-paying job and purchase goods. To avoid dying alone it is best for you to get married and have children. You have been forced to accept these incentives for many generations. This indoctrinates us into believing that this is the proper way to live. However there isnt a right way to live in practice.
No incentives are wrong. . There are merely incentives. The incentives I made you laugh about in the story above however show how incentives that emerge from the ashes of society—those that lack individuality or significance—lead to predictably lives that are unfulfilled and filled with significant uncertainty. It is crucial that you ask yourself this question rather than just following the steps. Is my behavior motivated by self-gratification or by the desire to please others?
You can live your life as you see fit without permission. You are under no obligation to marry. Children are not required of you. If you do decide to have children you dont have to send them to soul-crushing schools where all they are required to do is learn formulas and facts they dont care about. Actually you can only choose the right incentives for yourself. What you wish to accomplish in life is up to you.
It should be your choice even if you accept a well-paying job merely to be able to purchase items. Conversely you shouldnt feel guilty about accepting a position that some people believe to be less lucrative. Nobody elses opinion matters if youre doing something you enjoy. I suggest delaying marriage. Later have children. Save moving up the corporate ladder for when youre at your most creative.
Place the objectives that are not yours in the Things to Forget box. Use your energy to strive for something extraordinary while youre still young. Something you are interested in.
Something that will keep you motivated.
So the next time you find yourself looking for advice on how to stay motivated in whatever you do look inside yourself and ask why and if you really care.
