Are You Just Going Through the Motions?

I ask myself Am I just going through the motions? Am I just taking lifes next logical step? Why am I doing ANY of this? as I bang away at my keyboard my thoughts burning brightly and my goals crystal clear. Youve probably thought the same thing before.

There is no change in routine or style when driving to and from work. For certain people doing the same thing every day has no impact on their lives. All theyre doing is going through the motions. Its a way of thinking that I just dont get. Im not saying that routines are bad.

Our routines and habits are established for a reason: to keep us stable and enable us to live as long as possible. Routines are something our bodies are accustomed to growing into. . In this manner we are not subjected to the ongoing strain of an uncertain lifestyle. However there are unquestionably better routines than others.

We are all capable of forming habits that open the door to an extremely ideal life in the future. To achieve our desired results we simply need to be able and conscious enough to decide which routines we should and shouldnt cultivate. Well how about we try it? If youre prepared to make some changes and stop merely going through the motions youve just taken the first step toward living the life you desire. Check out these best practices for escaping your current pattern.

1. Find out whats not functioning. Before you can switch up your existing routines you must first identify what isnt working for you. Perhaps spending two hours a day reading isnt all that bad. Perhaps spending an hour watching Seinfeld religiously is just something you like to do (in fact its one of my guilty pleasures).

More significant than merely doing something different is determining whether a routine is providing you with the greatest level of satisfaction overall. Identifying the importance of an activity in your life can be done most effectively by. . . (1b).

Consider the three -INGs. What am I doing? Honestly confronting your actions can occasionally make you realize how time-consuming or inefficient they are. Is there anything youre learning from your work? Are you learning a new skill or have you been doing the same thing for so long that its become second nature?

What am I getting? – If your routine is teaching you new skills will they be beneficial in the long run? Wouldnt it be better to spend your time somewhere else? 2. Remove the idiot box.

. I am one of those people who can control how much time they spend watching TV. Since television these days is so unappealing I usually only watch an hour of Seinfeld every day after returning from college. However I advise going all out with the boob tube for those who are on the other end of the spectrum (you know the guys who can watch hours of TV every day). The primary cause of this is your lack of productivity.

Unless youre watching a number of documentaries that speak to a skill you want to learn or that actually interest you (see 1b. TV is a HUGE waste of time. Now break the pattern. Later youll appreciate me. 3.

Use email wisely. Email would be checked ten to twenty times a day if you were like me. To be honest making a few clicks to check your email doesnt take up much time but it does cause you to lose focus. Furthermore doing it is just plain boring. The answer is to check it just a few times a day namely in the morning afternoon and evening.

Spend an hour on simply deleting responding to and creating messages when the weekend arrives. Try to limit how frequently you handle email though obviously this wont work for everyone. 4. Try something wholly unconventional. Its time for a change if you know exactly how your day will go and youre not particularly excited about it.

Go ahead and try that thing youve always wanted to do! You no longer need to just follow the steps you now define your own steps. Shmoutine routine take charge of your life. You should always have a reason for your actions. It doesnt mean you cant alter your routine just because youve been doing it for a long time.

Risk something. Do something different. When youre supposed to be calm act explosive.

To live life is to unexpect the expected and to experience each day as if it were a new one.
