How to Take Back Your Summer: Test Your Assumptions

How to Take Back Your Summer: Test Your Assumptions

Most college students summers typically include these four activities. - Going abroad. Participating in an internship that is probably unpaid. Getting a job just like my roommates. Alternatively just relaxing at home.

It would be equally easy for me to do any of these. As usual though Im going in a different more intriguing direction. Unlike my usual summertime routine of working for my parents writing sporadic blog entries and staying at home Im going to go out on my own for the next three months. I will be staying in the heart of Chicago and escaping the suburban doldrums of lazy days. In addition to continuing to write posts Ill be testing my hypotheses.

Does the blog allow me to earn money? Before the summer is over can I reach 1000 subscribers? Are some of the top online entrepreneurs available for interviews? Can Zen Habits accept a guest post from me? The days of spending most of my vacation watching TV and playing video games are long gone.

That was when I was younger now is the moment to accomplish something truly remarkable. An excellent time to try new things is during summer vacation. A time to explore new avenues and embark on new adventures. Though I recognize that you might not be a college student anymore and that your vacations are typically shorter than three months due to work obligations dont you think its time you took action? Take a break.

I already know you will object to this. Perhaps they are pre-planned justifications such as having children to care for bills to pay or a job to earn money. Throw these excuses away for not enjoying the greatest time of year. In actuality all of these issues have straightforward fixes. You dont have to spend the summer traveling to a far-off place in another nation.

Perhaps it would be better to simply move out of town and spend some time in a new place. If you choose to take a break from working your children wont go hungry. Bring them along. However it appears that the main concern when it comes to vacationing is whether or not you will have sufficient funds. Rest assured that I have that avenue covered.

Consider the following actions to begin preparing. 1. Sell items that you dont need or desire. Summer is a great time to get rid of everything you dont need but instead of throwing it away consider selling it. Watch the money come in for items you thought no one would even consider buying when you have a traditional garage sale.

I sold the majority of my old college textbooks this year along with my iPod Touch which hasnt been used in over a year. 2. Negotiate a summer job. Express to your boss that you would like to take a few hours off from work at the office or beg them to do so depending on how generous they are. Even though you might not be able to quit your job entirely if you truly need to try to work out a deal that will allow you to continue earning money and still have time for other interests.

For the time being I wont have to worry about finding a job because of the money Ive saved up from working for my parents. 3. Save money now. You might be surprised to learn how simple it is to accumulate enough cash for a three-month vacation. All you need to do is cut back on your consumption significantly and watch for the best offers to avoid spending a lot of money.

Stop buying in bulk and only purchase what you require. You can save money on warm clothing in the fall and winter by purchasing sweaters in the summer. Simple frugal living you see. 4. Learn something worthwhile for yourself.

You can pick up many skills during your break that will come in very handy. I intend to experiment with Photoshop CSS and HTML code in order to possibly avoid ever having to pay for pricey web design. Here are some recommendations. Learn how to design websites (like me). Engage in dialogue with strangers to enhance your social abilities.

- learn a new language. To get better at writing try writing stories. Many of the changes are already in progress. Once you have considered these steps simply get up and leave. Just do it without considering the repercussions.

Im approaching the summer with this mindset. I havent been asked to do this. I had no motivation to cultivate this lifestyle. However I do it because I know it will ultimately make me happier. The same applies to you.

You can either keep having the same summer every year or you can start planning now and take advantage of your vacation to do something youve never thought of. Do it. With no clouds in the sky the sun will be shining brightly. Is there a better day to take a chance?
