The post for today was initially going to be brief and to the point but I discovered that I had a lot more to say about the specific topic of the day. The issue with personal growth. The legitimacy of personal development has been a topic of much debate. Some people believe that bettering oneself and ones life is a noble and worthy endeavor. Ive read about people who have found success by heeding self-help advice. Some though believe it to be nonsense. To the average person self-help and personal development seem dubious. In all honesty the skeptics are not entirely wrong.
I want to yell at the people who purchase self-help books who claim that they will improve your life and end all your lifes problems. . Come on nobodys life will be completely changed by a book right? I suppose this is the point at which I shift my position and declare Self-help is good stuff actually. . No Im not. At least according to the positive stereotype self-help is nonsense. the stereotype.
We immediately think of some crazy person whispering to himself things like: when we hear the term self-help. . Do what you enjoy and the money will come. . . What you think will become you. . Im unique so I can do anything I want.
Nobody else on the planet is like me. . Upon closer inspection you will discover that each of these terms has significant problems with clarity. Its reasonable to assume that these and similar statements are outright false. Lie claims made by purported gurus of personal development. The time has come to awaken. In the past you could simply post inspirational sayings and thought-provoking clichés online and hundreds of thousands of people would be interested in them. The key words here are a long time ago.
. In the twenty-first century people are much more intelligent. You cannot expect good things to happen to you by simply repeating mantras. They would have already occurred if you had. A book cannot be purchased with the expectation that it will transform your life. You alone are capable of doing so. Be ready to live your life as you did before your life-altering book purchase even if a self-proclaimed expert gives you all the encouragement in the world that you can do it too. .
Heres what you should do about the five lies that the typical self-help expert will tell you. We must stop the falsehoods. You must be told the truth if you truly want your life to change you cannot afford to base your aspirations on false promises. Almost every generic self-help blog Ive ever read contains the top 5 lies listed below. Ill be exposing these lies and providing you with the real story. If youre not ready stop reading. 1. Nothing is impossible for anyone to accomplish.
Everyone would be wealthy if that were the case. Mansions expensive cars yachts and whole armies would all be at the disposal of everyone. I hate to say it but not everyone is able to do it. Some people are more tolerant of punishment than others. Experience varies among individuals. The web is simply more familiar to some people than others. Certain individuals possess superior genes. But everyone has some talent.
There are some things you can do better than others. You simply cannot perform the same tasks more effectively. Believe that nothing is impossible that you think you can accomplish if you believe nothing else. You decide what this means to you. 2. You will always be loved for you by others. Do you believe that having a well-known personal brand will make people forget about the poor quality of the content you offer? Gary Vaynerchuk probably wouldnt have an audience if he didnt put any effort into his videos as Ill explain below.
Heres a little reality for you. View my most recent post. Look at how many retweets and comments it received. Not much in contrast to my earlier ones. The reason for this is that it lacked the depth and interest of my previous posts. When creating the title I gave it almost no thought. It received one comment to be sure but nobody was moved to discuss it. Anyones faith that love is unconditional is undermined by this.
Yes until you do something to earn their disdain people will always love you. 3. If you learn enough about something you can become an authority on it. This is blatantly dishonest. No matter how much time you devote to studying something thoroughly you wont become an expert just because youre interested in it. Its true that you will know more than the average person if you study something for a long enough period of time. You wont however have any practical experience. Before you can begin imparting your knowledge to others you must first test it in the real world.
But suppose that you are knowledgeable enough to instruct others. Youre still not an expert you know? Knowledge is ever-expanding rather than static. People will learn different things ten years from now than they did today. You should always be learning and think of yourself as a student. 4. The money will come if you pursue your passion. In case you havent heard allow me to share something with you.
Many people have passions for their hobbies. Of course not but does that imply that they profit from them? A lot of people write dance and sing. The great majority of those individuals are completely unemployed. When people see the above lie they become wildly optimistic and idealistic. Is that really all it takes? . In reality there is much more to it than that.
You must make certain sacrifices if you wish to profit from your
passion. Perhaps it entails enduring the unrelenting criticism of those who once believed in you or forgoing a few years of steady income. Regardless it will be difficult. But if youre prepared then go ahead and do it. So far its really difficult for me. 5. If you stand out people will notice you. One more ambiguous ambiguous motto.
Actually this couldnt be further from the reality. Being distinctive and authentic is what it means to stand out in this day and age. Unfortunately people find it extremely difficult to be authentic. They therefore turn to merely standing out for the sake of standing out rather than being authentically themselves. Consequently this conveys the idea that youre trying to be so different that people can tell its not real. In reality we already differ society merely makes us conform by enforcing rules taboos peer pressure and other means. ). You can only be authentically yourself and stand out from the crowd when you can overcome the programming and let go of the boundaries you set for yourself.
There you have it then. The top five self-help fallacies. You are welcome to disagree below.
