Feeling unfounded fear is the first indication that youre successfully escaping mediocrity. When youre pushing yourself beyond your comfort zone youre more afraid than when youre doing something for the first time. When the thin line separating the invisible from the break-out superstar and the mediocre from the brilliant is crossed it can become emotionally overwhelming. You start questioning your skills as you cross this threshold including how good you are now and how good you believed you were.
These are some of the common questions we ask ourselves. Wow I never realized how good I am. Am I truly this good? .
Is it better to stop now? Maybe Ill be one of those one-hit wonders. . Is it a trick?
This seems too good to be true. . A lot of us believe that the reason we ask ourselves these questions is because we are about to fall back into the abyss of mediocrity. That its too good to be true sensation is what tries to revert us to our previous thought patterns.
Fortunately this is a normal feeling. You ask yourself these questions because youre about to surpass mediocrity not because youre headed back there. Its normal to feel unworthy of the good things that are happening to you. For example a child who has never ridden a bike before will still want his parent to follow him to ensure he doesnt fall.
However we shouldnt give in to a feeling just because its normal. overcoming your fear of realizing your full potential. When people realize how much power they truly possess they are initially a little afraid. However maintaining this mindset may prevent you from ever giving it your all.
Fortunately Ill be here to walk you through three strategies for embracing your confidence and overcoming your fear of your potential. 1. Recognize that you are the one who sets the boundaries. Perhaps youve achieved such amazing results from doing your best that you believe you cant do any better.
Its a reasonable assumption but the only way that statement could be accurate is if you quit doing what youre good at. And unless youre totally depressed I dont think that will happen anytime soon. The idea that you fall back into the pool of average after giving it your all should be dispelled. You will almost never lose your ability if you always give it your all.
Dont allow fictitious boundaries to stop you from reaching far higher skill levels. Your best performance from yesterday wont translate to your best performance from tomorrow. 2. You shouldnt expect to remain amazing.
When you accomplish something extraordinary you start to believe that everyone is counting on you to continue the trend. Although you should always try your hardest remember that you are only human. You lose some and you win some. Even though you might be amazing one day dont put undue pressure on yourself to continue being your best.
Its unhealthy. In certain instances I dedicate my entire day to striving for the highest possible standard of performance because I feel compelled to always give it my all. Along with learning my lesson I also got rid of unnecessary stress. When you are able produce when you are not rest.
3. Utilizing what you dont have is a waste. This leads us to my last piece of advice: avoid attempting to draw conclusions from nonexistent things. You cant expect to give it your all if youre trying to get stronger or faster and dont have the energy to run or lift weights.
Running on empty only increases the likelihood of failure which is already high. I should have spent my time reading or doing something else I enjoy instead of wasting it trying to write all day. What a waste of time and effort. So that you know you can do better I advise you to use what you already have on hand.
The fear only arises when you expect yourself to do more and you know that you are powerless to act at the moment of truth. Listen to your intellect rather than your emotions. Recognize when to stop. The fact that all three of these strategies for overcoming fear involve some sort of conflict is what makes me laugh.
Shouldnt you have high expectations for yourself when you can continue to do more and shouldnt you be able to continue even if you lack the energy if the boundaries are in your mind? It is up to you to find the answers to these questions. I dont know yourself as well as you do. The best method to overcome the fear of realizing your potential is something I can teach you but its up to you to have faith in your ability to strike the correct balance between understanding and surpassing your limitations.
